Background

At the Mathematics of Planet Earth Australia 2013 conference participants decided to create a network to sustain and grow partnerships established during MPE Australia 2013.

The network connects mathematics and statistics departments at AMSI member universities with AMSI’s government agency members and Geoscience Australia.

The network will be integrated with the new National Research Centre in the fullness of time.

Purpose

The network will ensure:

  • Research collaboration between agencies and universities
  • The future supply of mathematically prepared students to the Australian workforce.

These objectives will be achieved through collaboration between agency professionals, mathematicians, statisticians, university researchers and students and bringing together the many mathematical sciences PhD graduates outside of academia with the academic community.

Short-term Goals
A network to facilitate Agency engagement with students and researchers at AMSI member universities, laying the foundations for long-term targeted engagement.

Long-term Goals
An established network facilitating long-term partnerships between mathematical sciences departments and agencies which include shared external research funding, Agency input to mathematical sciences curricula and co-supervision of PhD students.
